Kimberly Sernel
Education and Experience
Kimberly Sernel is a CPA and a writer, graduating as class valedictorian from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in accountancy. She began her career in public accounting as a financial statement auditor, working for both Arthur Andersen and Deloitte. As an auditor, Kimberly gained experience in manufacturing, distribution, education, government, and healthcare.
After four-years of public accounting, Kimberly worked another five-and-half years in high-profile corporate finance positions at W.W. Grainger and HSBC. Kimberly continued to move up the management ladder, as she won awards and promotions regularly because of her commitment and drive to continue to learn and grow in the roles that she took on.
A Passion for Writing
Kimberly’s favorite part of her work centered on her writing. Along the way, Kimberly refined her communication into a clear and concise style, bringing unique insight and clarity to complex situations. In each of her roles, she found herself drawn to client interviews, write-ups, research, and the development of presentations. The more she wrote, the more she wanted to expand her writing into other topics that interested her, such as current events, government, entertainment, and health and fitness.
Freelance Writing Career
After significant consideration, Kimberly took a risk and left Corporate America. Today, while she continues to engage her financial skills working for her family's music publishing and production company, her primary focus is on developing her writing career. Her successes in Corporate America came from her attention to detail, research skills, leadership, and results-driven focus. Kimberly uses and expands upon these same skills in her writing. Her efforts have led her to the following:
- Engaged as a contract writer with Careerbuilder.com to work with job-seekers to develop resumes, cover letters, thank-you letters, and references.
- Published writing with Textbroker, wiseGEEK, and Suite101, covering a mix of topics from music entertainment, faith, sports, and health and wellness.
- Furthering her professional development and earning a Certificate of Completion in Technical Writing.
Opportunities for Kimberly to write abound, allowing her to focus her journalistic tendencies on sharing her research and knowledge on a variety of topics, with an endless community of potential readers.
